1、 What is ERP registration for electric water heaters
The "electric water heater ERP registration" referred to in the industry is a combination of EU ErP ecological design compliance and energy efficiency label EPREL filing, rather than issuing an "ERP certificate".
ErP comes from Energy related Products, with the legal basis being the Ecological Design Directive 2009/125/EC; the Water Heater Special See (EU) 814/2013 (Ecological Design) and (EU) 812/2013 (Energy Efficiency Labeling), with the labeling framework following (EU) 2017/1369. After completing the testing, the supplier needs to register the model in the EU EPREL database and generate an A-G energy efficiency label with a QR code before customs clearance and listing on Amazon/supermarkets.
The difference between it and DOE: DOE is registered with CCMS in the United States; The EU system includes energy efficiency compliance and EPREL disclosure under the CE system, and non EU factories cannot be directly registered and must use European agents.
2、 Applicable product scope
Storage type electric water heater, instant electric water heater
Heat pump water heater, solar assisted electric water heater
Supporting hot water storage tank (also needs to be separately sold)
Typical boundary: Civil hot water equipment with rated thermal output ≤ 70 kW and water storage capacity ≤ 500 L
General exemption for high-power industrial hot water equipment; UK domestic adoption of UK energy efficiency system, EPREL not interoperable
3、 Core regulatory basis
2009/125/EC: Ecological Design Framework Directive
(EU) 814/2013: Implementation Regulation on Ecological Design of Water Heaters and Water Storage Equipment
(EU) 812/2013: Implementation Regulation on Energy Efficiency Labels for Water Heaters
(EU) 2017/1369: General Regulation on Energy Efficiency Labeling, A-G Classification, QR Code, EPREL Mandatory
(EU) 2023/826: New regulations on standby/shutdown power consumption, tightening standby limits starting from May 9, 2025
Coordinated standards: Electric water heater EN 50440, standby EN 50564, heat pump EN 16147
Note: By the end of 2025, the European Union has notified the draft of the new ecological design/labeling for water heaters (G/TBT/N/EU/1174, 1175), which is expected to be passed in 2026. PCM water storage tanks and cogeneration water heaters will be included, and spare parts and dismantling and recycling information will be strengthened. Export needs to track the effective date.
4、 Core testing indicators
Routine measurement of storage type electric water heater:
Hot water heating energy efficiency η wh and annual hot water energy consumption (kWh/a)
24-hour water storage heat loss (limited by capacity)
Standby/shutdown power consumption (normal ≤ 0.5 W, networking ≤ 2.0 W, new regulations in 2025)
Hot water output rate, temperature control accuracy (within ± 2 ℃ of restart temperature difference)
Hot water demand specification level (M/L/XL/XXL)
Noise (additional measurement for heat pump models)
The focus of instant heating is on balancing heating response with low energy consumption; Heat pump with COP measurement; Gas turbine is tested for NOx/CO (non electric water heater main line).
5、 Basic registration process
1. Classification and standard confirmation
Lock the range of 814/2013 according to capacity, power, and heating method, and select testing programs such as EN 50440.
2. Sample testing
2-3 mass-produced identical prototypes will be sent to the ISO 17025/CNAS laboratory for formal ErP testing reports.
3. Prepare technical documents (PIF/Technical File)
Includes product description, drawings, BOM (heating tube/thermostat/insulation layer), test report, energy efficiency calculation sheet, instruction manual, risk assessment, DoC draft.
4. European+EPREL registration
Non EU manufacturers sign EU proxy agreements, and EU proxies log in to EPREL, upload model, energy efficiency level, parameters, label samples, QR code links, and generate a unique registration number.
5. Labeling and DoC
Product body label ≥ 110 × 220 mm, packaging ≥ 36 × 72 mm, including A-G grade, annual power consumption, supplier, and QR code; Display electronic tags next to prices on online pages; Sign the EC Declaration of Conformity (DoC) and affix the CE mark.
6. Record keeping
Technical documents, test reports, and DoC shall be retained by the European representative/manufacturer for at least 10 years for future reference.
6、 Key points of model management
The inner liner, heating system, power, and volume are consistent, with only color/appearance differences → report can be shared
Changes in volume, power, inner container material, and temperature control scheme → Re measurement and re registration
The same series of different energy efficiency levels cannot share the same registration number
The prototype must be produced consistently, and if it fails the spot check, it will be taken down/fined/banned from sale
7、 Continuing obligations after registration
Design/BOM/firmware changes affect energy efficiency → retest+update EPREL
The new regulations on standby power consumption (2023/826) have come into effect, and old models will be reviewed
Spare parts supply, maintenance information, and dismantling and recycling information (new trend) should be fully prepared
The e-commerce page, manual, and nameplate values must be consistent with the EPREL filing values
Customs and market supervision will scan QR codes to verify authenticity, and intercept counterfeit records directly
8、 Common Misconceptions
Treat "ERP certification" as a permanent certificate (actually compliance+database filing)
Only do LVD/EMC CE, miss ErP energy efficiency CE and EPREL
Domestic factories open their own EU Login registration (registration is invalid without European agency qualifications)
Using old A+++tags, without replacing the A-G+QR code
Mixing UKCA/UK energy efficiency with EU EPREL
The heat pump water heater only measures power consumption but not COP/noise, and there is a missing item on the label
In one sentence: Electric water heater EU ERP=energy efficiency and heat loss testing according to 814/2013+EN 50440 standby → making technical documents and DoC → European agent registering QR code labels in EPREL → keeping records for ten years for spot checks, not just obtaining certificates.
