IEC 62471-6

2026-10-30 Industry News

1、 Standard positioning

IEC 62471-6:2022 is part 6 of the "Photobiological Safety of Lamps and Lamp Systems" series, titled "Ultraviolet Lamp Products". It is a vertical specialized standard based on the general basis of IEC 62471, developed by IEC TC 76, specifically addressing the evaluation, grading, and labeling of products with "emitting ultraviolet radiation as the core function" in terms of optical radiation safety.

2、 Applicable objects

Covering lamps and lamp systems that primarily output ultraviolet radiation, including:

UV LED、 Low/high pressure mercury lamps, excimer lamps, deuterium lamps, etc

Sterilization/disinfection lamp, insect trap lamp, fluorescent excitation black light lamp

UV light source for scientific research, mineral identification, non-destructive testing, and anti-counterfeiting identification

UV equipment for nail art curing, ink curing, etc

Medical diagnostic and cosmetic products that primarily emit ultraviolet radiation

Typical judgment threshold: In the total radiated power range of 180 nm to 3000 nm, if the proportion of the 180 nm to 400 nm ultraviolet band is greater than 50%, it will be included in this section; Otherwise, return to the general standard IEC 62471.

3、 Exclusion scope

Ordinary lighting fixtures, products mainly based on visible light/infrared

UV fluorescent lamps for skin tanning (according to IEC 60335-2-27/IEC 61228)

UV therapeutic medical equipment (classified under IEC 60601-2-57)

Non optical radiation hazards such as ozone generation and mercury leakage are not included in this standard

4、 Evaluate Logic

Different from the general standard of "fixed close range, worst-case scenario", Part 6 emphasizes:

Based on the actual use of the product, expected exposure distance, and single use duration

Using Time Weighted Average (TWA) effective irradiance/irradiance

Key weighted assessment of the photochemical damage risk of UV-B and UV-C to the eyes and skin

Measurement is carried out at maximum output state, with a distance set according to the real scene (such as 0.5m for household use and 1m or more for professional disinfection)

5、 Risk grouping

Classify UV products into four levels:

RG0 (Exemption): Normal use without risk

RG1 (low): Safe under normal behavior

RG2 (medium): Dependent avoidance response, short-term exposure requires vigilance

RG3 (high): Even short-term exposure is harmful and requires engineering control and human-machine isolation

The grading results are directly used for product safety design, usage restrictions, and compliance assessment.

6、 Identification and User Information

Standard requirements are given by risk group:

UV risk level label for product body or packaging

Safety warning, no direct eye/touch prompt

Explanation of protective measures such as installation distance, running time, personnel isolation, delayed start/human body induction, etc

Occupational exposure and workplace management recommendations in the manual

7、 Standard Value

IEC 62471-6 separates "UV based" products from the general photobiological safety framework and replaces overly conservative assumptions with dose logic that is closer to real-life scenarios. This not only avoids misjudgment of low-risk products, but also forces high-risk UV equipment to perform isolation and warning. It is the core basis for the export of UV disinfection, curing, and testing products (CE/CB/e-commerce compliance) and the conversion of domestic GB/T 30117.6
