China’s household dishwasher export sector is encountering structural growth opportunities. In Q1 2026, China’s total dishwasher shipments hit 3.005 million units, including 2.309 million units for overseas markets, representing a year-on-year increase of 12.9% with export proportion rising to 77%. Although the US market faces short-term fluctuations driven by tariffs and other factors, it ranks as the world’s second-largest dishwasher consumer market, with the compact dishwasher segment reaching a market size of USD 1.6 billion in 2024.
Chinese suppliers hold over 65% market share in dishwasher categories, with leading brands continuously expanding their competitive edge supported by mature supply chains. However, compliance certification serves as the primary entry barrier for US market access, and a UL 749 test report is a mandatory compliance document required for product listing on e-commerce platforms such as Amazon.

UL 749 is a dedicated safety standard developed by Underwriters Laboratories exclusively for household dishwashers, and it constitutes a mandatory safety compliance requirement for dishwashers exported to the United States.
Its scope covers all electrically powered household dishwashers, including countertop, built-in and sink-integrated models.
Structural difference from Chinese national standards: The GB/T 4706 series in China adopts a combined framework of general standards plus product-specific supplementary clauses, while UL 749 functions as an independent standalone standard for dishwashers, imposing more granular safety requirements on product structures and individual components.
Insulation performance test: Verifies the effectiveness of electrical insulation structures
Ground continuity test: Confirms reliable protective earthing functionality
Overload protection test: Requires the circuit to cut off power within 0.1 seconds under a 16A fault current
Electric shock hazard prevention: Tested with UL standard test probe
Mechanical hazard protection: Prevents physical injury caused by moving internal components
Simulates normal operating cycles to measure surface temperatures of key components. The surface temperature of metal parts shall not exceed the 60°C limit.
Non-metallic materials must achieve at least HB or V-2 flammability rating
Oven aging test (7 hours of high-temperature baking) to verify no cracking or permanent deformation of outer casing components
Structural stability assessment for long-term continuous operation
Service life verification of sealing components
Step 1 Submit Test Application File a UL 749 testing application with an ISO/IEC 17025 accredited laboratory.
Step 2 Prepare Technical Documentation Fill out the official application form and submit product user manuals, technical datasheets, circuit schematics, bill of materials and other supporting files.
Step 3 Quotation Confirmation The laboratory identifies applicable test items based on product configuration and issues a formal quotation.
Step 4 Send Test Samples Deliver 1 to 2 fully finished production prototypes to the laboratory after confirming the quotation.
Step 5 Full Standardized Testing The laboratory conducts comprehensive safety testing in strict compliance with all clauses of UL 749.
Step 6 Rectification & Retesting (If Required) In the event of failed test items, the laboratory notifies the applicant to implement product modifications, followed by supplementary retesting.
Step 7 Official Report Issuance Once all test criteria are satisfied, a formal UL test report will be released. No factory audit is required for this test report.
The following materials are generally required to initiate UL 749 testing:
Official test application form
English version of product user manual
Full product technical specification datasheet
Electrical circuit schematic diagram
Complete bill of critical components (BOM)
Finished product nameplate artwork and information
1 to 2 complete production prototypes
Under normal circumstances, the full cycle from sample receipt to official report issuance takes approximately one week. Actual turnaround may be affected by the following factors:
Product complexity and internal structural design
Whether all test items pass on the first attempt (rectification will extend the timeline)
Laboratory internal testing schedule
It is recommended to integrate safety standard design reviews during the product R&D phase to resolve common non-compliance risks in advance, which effectively shortens testing cycles and reduces rectification expenses.
UL 749 testing fees are not fixed and vary according to product structure, functional complexity and rated power:
Product type: Countertop, built-in and sink-integrated dishwashers carry different testing difficulty levels
Functional configurations: Units equipped with Wi-Fi smart modules, heating drying systems or variable frequency motors involve additional test procedures and higher costs
Material selection: The pre-existing flammability certification of non-metallic housings impacts testing scope
Retesting charges: Supplementary fees apply if the initial test yields non-compliant results
Applicants are advised to submit full technical data to the testing institution for a pre-assessment before sending samples, to identify potential compliance risks and obtain an accurate quotation.
As a professional third-party testing laboratory, we deliver comprehensive UL 749 testing support for dishwasher exporters:
Multi-layer authoritative accreditations: CNAS (L15898), CMA (202119015918) and IAS certified laboratory; our test reports are fully recognized by Amazon and other mainstream US cross-border marketplaces
Full-scope complete testing: All mandatory items including electrical safety, shock protection, temperature rise evaluation, material flammability testing and durability assessment
End-to-end one-stop service: Full support covering document pre-review, sample testing, technical rectification guidance and official report issuance
Supplementary combined testing service: Synchronous energy efficiency testing for dishwashers available, eliminating the need for separate sample delivery for multiple compliance projects
