Laser Source Testing: A Comprehensive "Physical Examination" for Lasers

2026-06-15 Industry News

A laser’s performance cannot be judged by subjective perception, but by objective data. Laser source testing uses professional instruments and standardized methods to accurately measure and evaluate a laser’s output parameters. It answers key questions: How powerful, stable and safe is the laser?

Without testing, a laser is just an uninspected "black box". You may assume it delivers sufficient cutting power, only to find its output is inadequate. You may expect a tightly focused beam, yet end up with a severely scattered spot. Worse still, excessive radiation can pose direct safety hazards to operators.

1. Why Lasers Need Routine Testing

The core objectives of laser source testing fall into four key aspects:

· Accurate Quantification: Convert visual observations into measurable, comparable data, including output power in watts, wavelength in nanometers and beam divergence in milliradians.

· Performance Evaluation: Verify whether a laser meets design specifications and fits specific application requirements.

· Safety Assurance: Excessively high power density can cause personal injury or material damage. Test data serves as the basis for establishing safety protocols.

· Application Matching: Lasers for processing, medical treatment, communication and other scenarios have distinct parameter requirements. Testing ensures proper model selection for intended use.

Untested lasers are like blind boxes — you can never confirm their actual performance or potential risks.

2. Core Test Items (9 Key Parameters)

· Wavelength: Determines the laser’s spectral characteristics, material absorptivity and applicable scenarios.

· Power & Energy: Output power (W) for continuous-wave lasers; single pulse energy (J) and average power for pulsed lasers.

· Beam Quality (M² Factor): The closer the M² value is to 1, the finer the beam focus and the higher the processing precision.

· Beam Divergence: A smaller divergence angle means better directivity, ideal for long-distance transmission such as ranging and radar systems.

· Beam Diameter & Spot Size: Directly impacts processing resolution and optical system design.

· Pulse Characteristics: Including pulse width, repetition frequency and pulse energy, which define peak power and working mode.

· Intensity Distribution: Energy distribution across the beam cross-section (beam mode), affecting processing uniformity.

· Spectral Linewidth: Narrow linewidth suits precision measurement, while broad linewidth is widely used in communication fields.

· Degree of Polarization: Linearly polarized laser is irreplaceable in nonlinear optics, holography and coherent detection.

These nine parameters cover the testing requirements for most laser products. The actual test items are selected according to product type and application scenarios.

3. Who Benefits from Laser Testing?

· Researchers: Minor deviations in laser parameters may lead to erroneous experimental results. Accurate testing is fundamental to discovering new phenomena.

· Industrial Manufacturers: The stability and consistency of lasers for cutting, welding and marking directly determine product quality and yield rate.

· Medical Institutions: For surgical and therapeutic lasers, precise power and energy output are critical to patient safety.

· Consumer Product Vendors: Testing is a mandatory requirement for laser pointers, star projectors, barcode scanners and similar products to meet safety standards and gain access to e-commerce platforms.
