More
We provide professional optical product testing services (laser product safety testing and performance parameter testing, photobiological safety testing for non‑laser products), as well as energy efficiency testing services (EU ErP energy efficiency testing, US DOE energy efficiency testing, California CEC energy efficiency testing), among others.
If you have requirements for laser products (laser product safety testing and laser performance parameter testing) and energy efficiency testing (EU ErP energy efficiency testing, US DOE energy efficiency, California CEC energy efficiency, UK energy efficiency testing), please feel free to email us at: admin@ctnt-cert.com
1、 First, explain the standard positioning
ANSI Z136.1-2022 "Laser Safety Use" is the parent standard for laser safety (under the jurisdiction of the LIA American Laser Society), which governs the "safety assessment of laser product use" rather than simply product performance testing at the factory. Therefore, the actual meaning of "Z136.1 testing" for laser cleaning machines is that a laboratory with ISO 17025 qualification conducts hazard classification testing, safety control measures verification, and safety evaluation of the entire machine according to this standard, and outputs a Laser Safety Evaluation Report. Product level mandatory testing (IEC 60825-1/FDA 21 CFR 1040.10) is another threshold, and the two are complementary and irreplaceable.
Laser cleaning machines are mostly 100 W-3 kW fiber lasers (commonly 1064 nm), almost all of which are classified as Class 4- both direct light and diffuse reflection can cause eye and skin damage and pose a fire risk, with the strictest detection requirements.
2、 Testing core projects
1. Actual measurement of laser output parameters
Tested wavelength, average power/pulse energy, pulse width, repetition rate, and beam divergence angle. The measurement needs to be carried out at the specified test aperture and distance (Z136.1 and IEC 60825-1 have differences in aperture and distance, and the report should indicate the aperture used), and the data will be used for subsequent hazard distance calculation.
2. Hazard classification determination
According to the classification rules in Chapter 3 of the standard, confirm that the entire machine belongs to Class 4, and verify the impact of the newly added requirement in the 2022 version - the degradation of transmittance of ultraviolet and near-infrared optical components on classification (the degradation of cleaning machine mirrors and protective window panels may change the output power).
3. MPE/NOHD/NHZ calculation
Based on the measured parameters, calculate the maximum allowable exposure (MPE), nominal eye hazard distance (NOHD), and nominal hazard zone (NHZ), and define the laser control zone (LCA) accordingly - this is the technical core of the entire report, determining the on-site protection boundary, warning sign placement, and eyewear OD level selection.
4. Engineering control function verification
Perform functional tests on safety interlocks, key switches, emergency stops, scanning head angle limits, and protective barriers/blackout curtains item by item; The control measures chapter will be reorganized in the 2022 version, and verification items will need to correspond to the new version's terms.
5. Identification and Warning Verification
Check whether the warning signs on the aircraft body and work area comply with ANSI Z535.2 (signal words, laser level, wavelength, maximum output power, warning symbols), and whether the safety warnings in the instruction manual are complete.
6. Verification of personal protective equipment
Check if the wavelength and optical density (OD) of the accompanying laser protective glasses match the calculated results. The glasses themselves should be tested according to ANSI Z136.7.
7. Non beam hazard detection
The 2022 version has rewritten the chapter on non beam hazards, covering detection of the amount and composition of ablative smoke/aerosols, effectiveness of local exhaust (HEPA), fire risk (workpiece surface ignition test), electrical and cooling system safety, and noise.
3、 Materials and samples that need to be prepared
Technical documents of the whole machine: laser parameters, optical path diagram, electrical schematic diagram, interlock logic explanation;
User manual, warning label drawings;
One prototype (with complete packaging and accessories), ensuring consistency with mass production status;
If export is involved, supplement the existing report of IEC 60825-1/21 CFR 1040.10.
4、 Result Usage and Precautions
The report is a prerequisite for procurement by US factory customers, integrators, and insurance providers, and also serves as a compliance certificate for OSHA enforcement (OSHA does not have independent laser regulations and directly cites Z136.1);
Laser cleaning belongs to open processing, and in Class 4 scenarios, the user must also designate a Laser Safety Officer (LSO) according to the standard and establish management control - testing only addresses the "equipment side", and compliance on the usage side is undertaken by the buyer's system;
If there is a laser power upgrade, optical component replacement, or structural change in the equipment, NOHD/NHZ needs to be recalculated and retested as appropriate;
The standard text needs to be purchased from the ANSI Webstore or LIA official website (PDF approximately $259), and hazard calculations must be based on the original tables and formulas.
Summary in one sentence: The ANSI Z136.1 testing of laser cleaning machines is a four in one safety assessment that includes "measured output parameters+hazard classification and distance calculation+interlocking/identification/PPE verification+non beam hazard assessment". The output is the Laser Safety Evaluation Report, not a "certification certificate".
