1、 What is ErP certification
The ErP (Energy related Products) certification originates from the EU Ecological Design Directive 2009/125/EC and is a mandatory requirement under the CE compliance system. It is not an independent certificate, but a combination of "test report+technical documents+declaration of conformity (DoC)+EPREL database registration" to prove product compliance. Products that have not completed registration or do not match information will face risks such as customs seizure and delisting from e-commerce platforms.
2、 Why do fan lights require 'dual compliance'
Fan lights are a composite product of "lighting module+fan motor", so it is not possible to apply the compliance template of a single product:
Lighting section: Built in LED light source, belonging to "light source containing lamps", must meet the mandatory requirements of the Ecological Design Regulation (EU) 2019/2020 and the Energy Efficiency Labeling Regulation (EU) 2019/2015;
Fan section: involving motor and standby power consumption, must comply with the relevant provisions of the ErP directive and fan energy efficiency requirements.
Two modules need to be independently tested, data collected separately, and registered in the EPREL system, with two types of parameters displayed simultaneously on the energy efficiency label. The common misconception is that "the lighting fixtures only need to meet certain standards", but in reality, the standby power consumption of the fan motor and the impact of overall heat dissipation on the light source are all within the scope of evaluation.
3、 Core regulations and technical requirements
Lighting module
Energy Efficiency Level: Starting from September 2021, the EU will implement a new A-G Level 7 label (replacing the old A+++system), significantly increasing the entry threshold;
Light efficiency and color rendering: The color rendering index usually needs to be ≥ 80; The luminous efficiency is classified according to the rated power and luminous flux calculation;
Strobe: Mandatory testing of SVM (Strobe Effect Visibility) and PstLM (Short Term Flicker Value) parameters, reports only testing SVM will be rejected;
Durability: Using a testing method of 1200 switch cycles (150 minutes on, 30 minutes off) for a total of 3600 hours, verify the luminous flux maintenance rate;
Standby/networking standby power consumption: Standby power consumption ≤ 0.5W, products with Wi Fi/Bluetooth functionality also have limited networking standby power consumption, and the two cannot be combined for calculation.
Fan module
Although the fan part does not directly participate in the A-G energy efficiency rating, it must meet energy efficiency and information requirements. It is worth noting that the new EU Ecological Design Regulation (EU) 2024/1834 for fans has come into effect on July 24, 2026, covering fans ranging from 125W to 500kW, raising the minimum energy efficiency level (FEG) limit, and strengthening the disclosure of partial load performance information and maintainability requirements. However, according to the industry FAQ, comfortable ceiling fans are currently not within the scope of this regulation, and fan lamp companies still need to pay attention to their subsequent revisions.
4、 Certification process
Product classification: Confirm applicable regulations and testing standards to avoid misjudgment of categories;
Sample testing: Entrust a laboratory with CNAS/ISO 17025 qualifications, usually requiring 8-10 samples (durability testing consumes a lot), covering light, color, electrical parameters, standby power consumption, flicker and other items;
EPREL registration: Non EU manufacturers must submit test reports, DoCs, and product information to the EPREL database through an EU authorized representative (EU representative). After approval, a unique label and traceability QR code will be generated. The registration information must be consistent with the mass-produced physical product, and replacing key components will result in the invalidation of the registration;
Labeling: The label must include the supplier name, model, A-G grade, energy consumption data, EPREL QR code, and regulation number (EU) 2019/2015, with a standard size of at least 36mm x 72mm;
File retention: The complete set of technical documents should be kept for at least 10 years for future reference.
5、 List of required documents
Model list, exterior photos (including internal structure), exploded view, multilingual instruction manual;
Circuit schematic diagram PCB Layout、 List of key components (LED light source, driver power supply, control module);
Full energy efficiency test report (light efficiency, flicker, standby power consumption, durability, etc.);
The calculation process of energy efficiency level, DoC signed by the manufacturer, and European agency information.
6、 Common Misconceptions and Compliance Suggestions
ErP is not an independent certificate, but a part of CE compliance;
Neglecting EPREL registration is a common reason for post market spot checks and delisting;
After product modification or replacement of components, re evaluation is required and old reports cannot be used;
It is recommended to include ErP compliance design in the product development stage, rather than seeking remedies before listing - in the context of continuously tightening EU regulations, compliance capability itself is export competitiveness.
