Faucets & Showerheads for Amazon Listing: ASME A112.18.1 Testing Is Mandatory

2026-09-16 Industry News

In recent years, cross-border e-commerce platforms have imposed increasingly stringent compliance reviews on bathroom products. Before listing faucets, showerheads and their accessories on Amazon US, sellers must not only meet platform-specific safe drinking water regulatory requirements but also comply with the core performance standard for water supply fittings in the North American market — ASME A112.18.1.

For bathroom accessory manufacturers and cross-border sellers, understanding the testing scope and procedures of this standard is essential for accessing the North American market.

01 Amazon Compliance Requirements for Bathroom Faucet Accessories

Amazon sets clear compliance thresholds for water-contact products. Under current platform policies, Amazon and North American buyers generally require products to comply with ASME A112.18.1 / CSA B125.1.

This standard assesses product quality and durability. Simply put, it verifies whether products perform reliably and withstand long-term use.

02 What Is ASME A112.18.1?

ASME A112.18.1 is a performance standard for water supply fittings jointly developed by the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) and the Canadian Standards Association (CSA), commonly referenced as ASME A112.18.1 / CSA B125.1.

It applies to all plumbing fittings installed between the water shutoff valve and the terminal outlet device, including but not limited to:

  • Faucets (kitchen, lavatory, bathtub)

  • Showerheads and handheld showerheads

  • Water supply fittings for washing machines

  • Bidet accessories

  • Automatic compensating valves

In short, it tests the sealing performance, pressure resistance, flow accuracy, service life durability and coating quality of faucet and shower accessories.

03 Core Test Items

ASME A112.18.1 testing evaluates real-world operational performance of products. Key test items include:

  • Leakage Test: Verify no leakage under combined temperature and pressure conditions. The sealing test is performed at 860 kPa and 66 °C water temperature with zero leakage required.

  • Burst Pressure Test: Products shall withstand hydraulic pressure of 3450 kPa for 1 minute without deformation or rupture.

  • Cycle Life Test: Faucets and lavatory fittings must pass up to 500,000 operating cycles to confirm long-term reliability.

  • Flow Rate Test: Validate flow performance under different water pressures to meet specified flow requirements.

  • Coating Adhesion & Corrosion Resistance Test: Evaluate bonding strength and corrosion resistance of surface finishes.

2024 Standard Update: Stricter requirements on flow rate and spray force for high-efficiency showerheads, plus additional test provisions for electronic components.

04 Testing Procedure

Step 1: Confirm applicable standard version and test itemsThe widely adopted version is ASME A112.18.1-2018 / CSA B125.1-18. Certain products may need to follow updates in the 2024 edition. Based on product type (faucet, showerhead, hose, etc.), identify the corresponding fitting-type test matrix in Appendix B of the standard.

Step 2: Sample submission and preconditioningSubmit representative samples to an ISO 17025 accredited laboratory. Some tests require samples to be conditioned under specified temperature and humidity for a period of time.

Step 3: Itemized testingCore tests typically include static & dynamic leakage test, burst pressure test, flow rate test, cycle life test, coating adhesion and corrosion resistance test.

Step 4: Report issuanceThe laboratory determines pass/fail based on test data and issues an official test report. The report can be used for platform review or buyer inspection.

05 Turnaround & Cost Reference

Testing Period: Duration varies by product type and test complexity. Generally, ASME A112.18.1 testing takes 3–10 working days. Tests involving full cycle life evaluation may take longer. Rush service is available for selected items, with some tests completed in as fast as 1.5 working days.

Important reminder: If your product requires additional Amazon certifications, the overall compliance timeline will be extended. We recommend sellers reserve at least 2–4 weeks for testing and document preparation before listing.

Cost: Pricing depends on product category, number of test items and whether full life-cycle testing is required. Quotation is available upon product evaluation.

06 Required Document Checklist

The following documents are generally required for ASME A112.18.1 testing application:

  • Test application form

  • Product technical specification sheet

  • Product structure and dimension drawings

  • Bill of critical components

  • Product user manual

  • Product photos

  • Representative test samples
