Plug-in night lights are common consumer goods in North American households and popular products on marketplaces including Amazon, TEMU and TikTok Shop. However, there is a mandatory compliance step before listing these items: obtaining a UL1786 test report.
North American platforms such as Amazon explicitly require night light products to submit a UL1786 test report issued by an ISO 17025 accredited laboratory. Without this document, sellers will be unable to list products or risk having listings removed.
01 What is the UL1786 Standard?
UL1786 is a dedicated safety standard for plug-in night lights published by Underwriters Laboratories (UL). The current valid version is the 2021 edition, serving as the core market access specification for plug-in night lights sold in North America.
Scope of application: Indoor plug-in night lights with an input power of maximum 10W and rated voltage up to 125V. It covers multiple light sources including incandescent lamps, LEDs, fluorescent lamps, neon lights and electroluminescent panels.
Products not covered:
Cord-connected luminaires with power cables
Night lights equipped with multiple electrical outlets
Multi-functional devices whose primary functions include deodorization, insect repellent or other features
Difference between Test Report and UL Certification
UL Certification: Full regulatory process including factory inspections and quarterly factory audits, high cost and long lead time.
UL1786 Test Report: Focuses on sample laboratory testing. No factory audit required. Shorter lead time and lower cost, sufficient to meet compliance review requirements for e-commerce platforms.
02 Core Test Items
UL1786 testing evaluates the safety performance of plug-in night lights and mainly includes the following categories:
Electrical Safety
Leakage current test: limit ≤0.5 mA
Dielectric voltage-withstand test: withstand 1000 VAC applied for 1 minute without breakdown
Abnormal condition protection: short-circuit or overload protection must cut off power within 0.1 seconds
Mechanical Structure
Drop test: product survives free fall from 1.5 meters
Plug pull test: verify connection stability
Enclosure opening probe test: prevent children from accessing live internal components
Temperature and Fire Resistance
Temperature rise test: under normal and abnormal operating conditions, enclosure temperature shall not exceed 90°C; insulating material temperature shall not exceed 125°C
Flame retardancy: plastic enclosure must meet UL94 V-2 or higher rating
Environmental Adaptability
Special function test: If the product has light sensor, human body sensor or similar functions, additional testing on sensing sensitivity and delay time is required.
03 Purposes of the Test Report
The primary use of the UL1786 test report is to satisfy listing compliance requirements for cross-border e-commerce platforms. North American marketplaces such as Amazon, TEMU and TikTok Shop require night light sellers to provide a UL1786 test report from an ISO 17025 accredited laboratory.
Failure to supply the report may result in blocked listings, delisting or even legal fines.

The report remains valid indefinitely as long as relevant regulations stay unchanged.
