As the core component of laser equipment, laser heads are widely used in industrial processing, medical surgery, communications, consumer electronics, and autonomous driving. From laser marking machines and laser cutting heads to ToF ranging modules and LiDAR, laser heads are everywhere. However, laser radiation can cause irreversible damage to human eyes and skin, making laser head safety classification testing the essential “passport” for products entering global markets.
IEC 60825‑1 is the foundational laser product safety standard developed by the International Electrotechnical Commission, applicable to laser products with wavelengths ranging from 180 nm to 1 mm. Through precise measurement of parameters such as laser output power, wavelength, and pulse characteristics, the standard classifies laser products into seven classes: Class 1, 1M, 2, 2M, 3R, 3B, and Class 4, specifying safety protection and labelling requirements for each class.
The core elements of laser head safety classification testing include: radiation parameter measurement (output power/energy, wavelength, beam divergence angle, pulse characteristics), safety function evaluation (protective housing integrity, safety interlocks, key controls, beam attenuators), label and manual review, and environmental reliability testing. After passing the tests, the laboratory issues an IEC 60825‑1 compliance report, which is widely accepted by major global market regulatory systems including EU CE, US FDA, and Australian ACCC.
The complete certification process typically consists of the following five stages:
Stage 1: Consultation, evaluation, and contract signing – The manufacturer submits basic product information to the testing body, which evaluates the product type, expected safety class, and applicable standards. Both parties confirm the certification plan and sign the contract.
Stage 2: Technical documentation preparation – The manufacturer must prepare product technical specifications, circuit schematics and PCB layout diagrams, laser component specifications, product structural drawings, laser warning label design drafts, user manuals, and bill of materials (BOM).
Stage 3: Sample submission and laboratory testing – Representative samples are sent to the laboratory for radiation parameter measurement and safety class determination, verification of safety interlocks, protective housings, labels, etc. Testing is typically conducted under both normal use and single‑fault conditions to ensure the equipment does not exceed the Accessible Emission Limits (AEL).
Stage 4: Report compilation and non‑conformance correction – If non‑conformances are identified, the testing body provides technical guidance to help the manufacturer make corrections, followed by re‑testing. After passing, the IEC 60825‑1 test report (TRF format) is issued.
Stage 5: Certificate issuance and ongoing support – The compliance report or certificate is issued, and support is provided for market surveillance inspections and customer audits.
The standard testing cycle is 7‑15 working days. For products with simple structures and complete documentation, some laboratories offer standard service within 5‑7 working days, with expedited services available to shorten to 3 working days. The following factors affect the actual timeline:
Product complexity: Multi‑wavelength beam‑combining, pulse‑modulated, or high‑power (Class 4) products take longer, typically 1.5 times longer than Class 1 products.
Rectification requirements: If design defects (e.g., housing light leakage, interlock failure) are identified during pre‑assessment, re‑testing after correction will add an additional 5‑10 days.
Heat dissipation and stability requirements: High‑power laser heads require more time for thermal management debugging.
Testing costs are not fixed and depend mainly on laser class, power level, and product complexity:
Low‑power consumer modules (e.g., mobile phone sensors, barcode scanners, laser pointers): fewer test items, relatively lower cost.
Medium‑ to high‑power industrial/automotive modules (e.g., laser engraving machines, medical aesthetic lasers): involve more complex radiation hazard zone calculations and multi‑wavelength assessment, with correspondingly higher costs.
Complex systems (e.g., multi‑wavelength beam‑combining lasers, LiDAR): require assessment of different wavelength weighting factors for eye hazards, with high technical difficulty – costs require a customised quotation.
It is recommended that manufacturers confirm the specific quotation with the testing body before submission, clarifying the scope of testing and any potential additional costs.
